When developers choose Convex, they're often betting their company on our infrastructure. That's a responsibility we take seriously, and fulfilling it begins with having a world-class relational database as our foundation. The database service that underlies Convex must be rock-solid, extremely fast, and cost-efficient.

For years, we've operated Convex on top of AWS Aurora. The experience has been okay. Aurora does what it says on the tin: it's reliable, it scales reasonably well, and it integrates nicely with the rest of AWS. But "okay" isn't where we want to stop.

So when PlanetScale released PlanetScale Metal earlier this year, we were honestly pretty jealous. The performance numbers they were showing off were incredible! We knew how deeply the PlanetScale team understands database services, and they were literally the only team we trusted enough to consider leaving behind Aurora. So we started wondering: what would it look like to build Convex on top of PlanetScale?

A couple of months ago, when we reached out to the team at PlanetScale to explore the idea, we discovered they were working on something new. Something perfect for the future of the Convex cloud service: PlanetScale for Postgres.

Today, we're thrilled to announce that Convex is a PlanetScale for Postgres launch partner. We've already started rolling it out to select projects, and the performance gains are incredible...

Quick Service

One of the first projects we moved over was our vibe coding product, Convex Chef. Yes, Chef generates Convex projects. But did you know Chef itself is built on Convex? All of Chef's message histories and project snapshots are managed in a single Convex backend:

/0:21

Here's what happened when we moved Chef onto PlanetScale:

Chef's p99 query time dropped from a noisy 10ms-15ms to a much flatter 5-7ms. Even more dramatically, the p99 batch commit time used to spike unpredictably between 75 ms and 200 ms, but now it holds steady around 20 ms.

To put it simply, p50 is the new p99.

Go fast now

Starting right now, every new Convex project runs on PlanetScale. Your app will be blazing fast, with room to scale as far as your ambitions take you.

I'm genuinely excited about building alongside the PlanetScale team to bring the very best version of Convex to our customers. If you've been waiting for the right moment to try Convex, or if you've been curious about what a truly high-performance backend feels like, now's the time. Head over to convex.dev and see what your app can do when it's running on infrastructure that's built for speed.
